Smart CSV

CSV to XLSX, on your phone

Convert CSV to Excel, with the types already right

Make an .xlsx from any CSV on your phone: numbers you can add up, real dates, checkboxes as TRUE and FALSE, and a bold, frozen header with filter buttons.

Setting a column type before exporting to Excel

How to convert a CSV file to Excel on your phone

  1. Open the CSV file in Smart CSV on your iPhone, iPad or Android phone.
  2. Filter, sort and hide columns until the table shows what you want. The workbook is exactly that.
  3. Tap ⋯ → Excel. A large table shows its progress, with Cancel.
  4. The share sheet opens with your-file.xlsx: send it, save it to Files, or open it in Excel, Numbers or Google Sheets.

Numbers stay numbers. Codes stay codes.

Tell Smart CSV what a column holds with column types, and the workbook follows: a number column becomes numbers in its format (decimal, currency or percent), a date column becomes real dates, and a checkbox column becomes TRUE and FALSE.

Values Excel would damage are kept as text on purpose: a leading zero that matters, like the postcode 02134 or the code 007, and anything longer than 15 digits, like a card number, which Excel would round.

Ready to use when it opens

One sheet, named after your file. The header row is bold, frozen at the top and has filter buttons on every column. Column widths are the ones you set in the app, and title lines above the header are left out, so row 1 is always the header. SeeExport to Excel for the details.

Questions

Why not just open the CSV in Excel?

Excel guesses what each value is, and it often guesses wrong: postcodes lose their leading zeros, long ids are rounded, and accented letters turn into symbols. An .xlsx made by Smart CSV already has the right types, so nothing is guessed.

Is CSV to Excel free?

Yes, up to 1,000 rows, with a line at the bottom of the sheet saying so. Smart CSV Pro has no row limit.

Is my file uploaded to convert it?

No. The workbook is written on your phone. Nothing is sent to a server.

What are Excel’s limits?

A sheet holds at most 1,048,576 rows and a cell at most 32,767 characters. If your file goes past either, Smart CSV tells you what was left out.

Your next CSV file deserves better than a wall of commas.
