Smart CSV

For Android phones and tablets

The CSV viewer and editor for Android

Tap a CSV in Downloads, Google Drive, Gmail or WhatsApp and see it as a proper table, not a wall of commas. Then search it, sort it, filter it and edit it.

How to open a CSV file on Android

  1. Install Smart CSV from Google Play.
  2. Find the CSV file: in Files or Downloads, in Google Drive, or as an attachment in Gmail, WhatsApp or another chat app.
  3. Tap it and choose Smart CSV, or share it to Smart CSV. Or open Smart CSV, tap + → Open CSV, and pick the file.
  4. The file opens as a table, with the separator and the encoding already worked out. If the preview looks right, tap Looks right.

Read it, then work with it

Search every cell and step through the matches. Hold a header to sort, or sort by several columns at once. Build filters that show the count before you apply them, orask in plain words and let the assistant build the filter.

Filtering CSV rows on a phoneEditing a CSV cell on a phone

Tap a cell twice to edit it, or open the row as a form. Add and delete rows and columns, paste cells from a spreadsheet, and undo anything. When you’re done, share the file as CSV, or export it as a PDF or an Excel file.

Big files without the wait

Smart CSV imports the file into a database on your phone and reads it a page at a time, so a file with hundreds of thousands of rows scrolls smoothly even on a modest phone. The first open shows a progress bar; after that the file opens instantly.

Files that come from anywhere

Bank exports, contact lists, inventory, survey results, data from an online shop: Smart CSV works out comma, semicolon, tab or pipe separators and the text encoding, from UTF-8 to Shift_JIS and Windows code pages. If a file was picked from Google Drive, Smart CSV notices when it changes and offers the newer version.

Questions

Why can’t my Android phone open a CSV file?

Android has no built-in app for CSV files, so tapping one either does nothing or opens it as plain text. Install a CSV viewer such as Smart CSV, and the file opens as a table.

Can I open a CSV file without Google Sheets or Excel?

Yes. Smart CSV opens the file on the phone itself, with no account, no upload and no conversion. You can search, sort, filter and edit it, and save it back as CSV.

My CSV opens as one long column. How do I fix it?

The separator was read wrong; files from some countries use semicolons instead of commas. Tap ⋯ → Import options and pick the right separator while you watch the preview. See Import options.

Does Smart CSV work on Android tablets?

Yes. On a tablet the table uses the whole screen, and with a keyboard attached you get arrow keys, Enter to edit and the usual shortcuts.

Your next CSV file deserves better than a wall of commas.
